The poor editing made it difficult to stay with the story. The main character is a lawyer who devoted nearly her entire career to defending death penalty cases. Then how is it that the text contains such basic errors in referring to "capitol" punishment, "pouring" over documents, "siting" a case in a legal brief, and many more? There are numerous sentences where words are omitted, jolting you right out of the story as you mentally fill in the word needed to complete the thought. There are also punctuation problems-- possessives that should not be since the words are simply plural, missing apostrophes where a possessive is intended, and missing commas and periods, often jarring in a way that forces re-reading. Some characters' names are spelled differently from one appearance to the next. The text felt cobbled together, sloppy, and completely missing an editor. Ms. Ivin is certainly a storyteller with merit, but she badly needs an editor and more exposure to the legal profession.Product details

I say it is a hard book because when it involves the death of a child, it is very emotional. The characters in the book were strong and easy to identify with. I have always believed in the death penalty, but I can also see where for someone to be sentenced to prison for life with no possibility of parole could actually be a harder sentence for some. The author takes you through some intense emotions with the lead character and makes her entirely believable.
I could only give this book 3 stars. It was just okay. First of all, I am in favor of the death penalty. This book did not make me change my mind. If anything I am more in favor of the 8th amendment. The main character was more interested in defending death penalty criminals than she was in her own family. I felt sorry for her husband and her daughter.
This book was written by a non lawyer. I hope the "legalese" is accurate.
Everything about this book is excellent. The pacing is well done. The plot is coherent and makes sense. The characters feel like real people. That last part is what makes this book so touching. I really felt for Lauren and Michael. I found myself hoping for them and cheering them on.
There isn't a lot of courtroom drama; only a few short scenes. Instead, we see Lauren as a person and not as an attorney.
You get so attached to these people and want so much for their lives to become somehow better. Yet the story ends very quickly and we do not get a real ending, either happy or sad. I hate quick endings, I just want to know it is coming and want all the loose ends tied up. That is really my only regret with this book, I loved the writing and the way she builds the story.
After finishing the author's memoir I read an excerpt of this book and purchased it because I wanted to continue reading. It reminded me a little of John Grisham's books, and I think that the author does a good job of portraying her characters and their motivations. I wish that the author had been more thorough when editing and proofreading both books that I read, as I find mistakes which should have been caught and corrected distract from the good writing. Better editing would have added a star, and I will look forward to it in the author's future books, which I shall hope to read as well.
Another Jonna Ivin win in a new format! I instantly got sucked into this book, starting it this morning & arguing with my lovely husband about getting my nose out of the book to pay attention to him until I finished it just now. I was very touched by this story, having had different views on the death penalty throughout my life.
It's hard to imagine being in Lauren's position & I thought 8th Amendment was beautifully written to reflect every difficult angle of the subject. I thought early on that I knew how it would all end up, but I was wrong. The only thing I knew for sure was that I didn't want to put it down until I found out. I hope to hear much more from Jonna Ivin.

There are no easy answers to the debate about the right or wrong of the death penalty, and none are given in this book for the reader or for the characters. It is the story of how a family reacts to and deals with the results of a heinous crime and comes with a mystery to be solved as Lauren tries to find a murderer.
This book does not argue for or against the death penalty. Instead, it puts the reader into the life of an attorney who is passionately opposed to the use of the ultimate penalty, and how she uses her knowledge of the system to work her way through her own personal tragedy. It becomes more a story of how one's principles can be tested when they are placed squarely up against personal realities rather than are simply some abstract concept and ideal. There is battle that takes place within Lauren that tears down and changes her relationships with those around her including her husband, Michael; her law partner, Gary; and even her clients on Death Row.
The characters are well-drawn, the dialog believable, and the situations could be pulled from police files. The reader can grieve with the victims and their families and see the dark side that is the reality of prisoners' and criminals' lives.
